Are you embracing Pokémon Go for your business?

Posted on: July 19th, 2016

With the release of Pokémon Go it’s been hard not to get swept up in the sensation.

Pokémon Go, an augmented reality game that tasks players with exploring the ‘real world’ to find Pokémon in the game’s digital universe, has attracted millions of users globally since its release. With millions of users around the world you’ve likely seen people holding up their cell phones as they walk, run or ride their bike down the street.

Of course, when millions of people head outside, things are bound to happen. The game uses real world locations, such as landmarks, public buildings, parks, etc., as checkpoints, causing lots of players to congregate in these particular places.

Which is great if you are a small business owner because your likely to attract more business if you get on the Pokémon Go bandwagon. Here’s a few tips we would recommend, especially if your place of business is a PokéStop…

   1. Offer free WiFi

Whilst the app doesn’t use large amounts of data to run once downloaded, users do need an internet connection to #catchemall. So providing free WiFi is a sure fire way to attract more customers.

   2. Play the game yourself*

If your place of business has been identified as a PokéStop you can activate a Lure Module, an in-game item, that attracts Pokémon to your location for 30 minutes. This function benefits those playing the game around you also as it provides a higher chance to catch those elusive Pokémon.

   3. Encourage players to visit

The worst thing a business owner can do is publically dismiss or ban those playing the Pokémon app. Put it this way, there are 21 million active users daily, that’s a big community of users. If you are negative towards the App you will almost certainly damage your brand.

   4. Embrace it

It’s simple, consider offering discounts to those who show you they are a user, name something after Pokémon, put up promotions on social media pages to encourage users to visit your store.
